my AFK trainee, Marcel, has now secured permanent employment at Arcadis UK Design & Consultancy.

Marcel told us: “My favourite part of the job is delivering the post to different departments and being out and about in the office meeting staff. I like working with Ade and I like working with Mark.”

After experiencing different work environments such as libraries, cafes and an international law firm, Marcel has found a working environment that suits him perfectly.

Marcel’s job coach Kat said: “Congratulations to Marcel on his appointment at Arcadis – it’s great to see him doing a job which he has chosen and loves. At [my AFK] we strongly emphasise the importance of all young people exploring different jobs to get a sense of what career options there are.

“By trying different roles, young people can identify their specific talents and areas that they might want to work on. Every new vocational experience is an opportunity to broaden knowledge about work life which is necessary for everyone to be able to make truly informed choices about their futures.”

Arcadis Office Facilities Manager, Mark Lewis, said:  “When I heard about Action For Kids’ Life & Work programme, I thought it was a great idea. I have friends whose family members are autistic so I knew I wanted to be involved. Marcel is such a polite, nice guy and he has progressed a lot since he started. We all agreed that after a work trial Marcel would get paid.

Ade added: “I didn’t know much about autism before I watched the video and met Marcel but I don’t see anything different, Marcel tries hard and is doing well, I am really impressed. The way he approaches people and is social with everyone in the office is great. I would advise other employers to recruit people with learning disabilities and autism and give them paid work. It is very important that people are paid for the work that they do.”
