David's story
David attended our Work Related Learning In-house Service via a mainstream school in north west London. He came on a two-week, full-time work experience placement. He has Muscular Dystrophy.
‘It affects all the muscles in my body and it gets worse as I get older. My brother and cousin have the same. The girls are carriers and the boys get it - apparently if I had children they wouldn't have my disability!
I was a bit nervous when I first came to AFK last year, I didn't know what jobs I could do or whether I could do anything. But this year I wasn't: working in the office is good, it's professional, they keep me busy and you get to meet people'.
Tony is currently studying GNVQ Business and Key Skills IT and is retaking his Maths GCSE:
‘Basically, these are the lessons that help me get points to go to uni. I am interested in science but my maths grades need to get better. I am not sure about the sort of job I would like to do in the future yet.
I like playing computer games and reading - especially Harry Potter and Alex Rider books. He is a secret agent, but he is only fourteen. In the last book I read he got shot and ended up in hospital, and that's the next book I get to read!'
