Easter 2008 Appeal for Jack

We were contacted by Linda, whose 14 year old grandson Jack suffers from a very rare and painful skin condition called ‘Epidermolysis Bullosa' (EB) which affects the way the layers of the skin move together.

In most people, the outer and inner layers of skin are ‘anchored' together so the skin moves as one organ. In people with EB these ‘anchors' are missing which means that even the slightest touch or movement creates friction between the layers which is very painful and causes blisters and sores. Many sufferers have described the pain as similar to that of third-degree burns.

Jack, at just 14 years old, is severely debilitated by his condition and he heavily relies on his mum Janet to care for him most of the day. He is in constant pain and even has trouble eating as the EB also affects the inside of his mouth and oesophagus.

A new powered ‘Permobil' wheelchair would dramatically improve the quality of Jack's life, enabling mobility with the minimum of friction. The specially designed padded seat and arm rests would ensure he can stay as comfortable as possible, without slipping into a position which causes him pain. But at a cost of £12,265 the chair is financially out of his family's reach. Sadly, every day without it is another exhausting day in preventable pain for Jack.

Janet spends around 3 hours each day bandaging Jack's body as even the touch of his clothing can be extremely painful. The new wheelchair would hold Jack in a more comfortable position so he doesn't have to make as many movements which will reduce the friction against his skin, greatly reducing his pain.

Jack is a very positive young man but his condition seriously affects his ability to carry out even the most basic of every day tasks. His new wheelchair would help him to become more mobile and give him much more independence, not only improving his self-esteem but easing the burden on his mum and the rest of his family.
