How to make your gift
Making a Will puts you in control and helps ensure that your money and your possessions go to the people and causes you most care about.
First of all, you should seek professional advice via a solicitor when you wish to make or change your Will to ensure that it is legally binding and it meets all your requirements. We can help you find a solicitor in your local area - for more information please contact us.
Value your assets: you should list all your major assets (e.g. house, cars, etc.) together with all your financial details (e.g. bank accounts, investments, etc). Then you should work out what you owe (e.g. mortgage, loans, etc). What is left after that is the net value of your estate before tax - what you have to leave in your Will.
If and when the time is right for you to include us in your Will, all you have to do is ask your professional advisor to include us with the type of legacy that suits your circumstances.
There are three main ways in which you can leave a gift in your Will
- Residuary Legacy: a percentage or share of your estate
We suggest the following wording is used by your professional advisor:
‘I give all (or ...%) of the value of my estate to Action For Kids Charitable Trust, Ability House, 15a Tottenham Lane, London N8 9DJ, (Charity registration number 1068841) and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge'
- Pecuniary Legacy: a gift of a set amount of money
- Specific Legacy: a specific item such as a piece of jewellery or property
If you would like to leave either of these types of legacy, we suggest the following wording is used by your professional advisor:
‘ I give to Action For Kids Charitable Trust, Ability House, 15a Tottenham Lane, London N8 9DJ, (Charity registration number 1068841) the sum of...(or item) and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge'
Changing your Will - Making changes to an existing Will is very straightforward - you can add a codicil. This is simply an addition or alteration to your existing Will, so you can add extra gifts or alter amounts being shared without making a new Will.
